Authentic Leadership
Authentic Leadership development involves ongoing processes whereby leaders and followers gain self-awareness and establish open, transparent, trusting and genuine relationships, which in part may be shaped and impacted by planned interventions such as training (Avolio, 2005).

Five Characteristics of Authentic Leadership
Purpose: Authentic leaders know what they are about and where they are going. They have a passion for their work and are inspired and intrinsically motivated to reach their goals.
Values: Authentic leaders understand their own values. Their behaviour towards others is guided by their values and they have a clear idea of what the right thing is to do.
Relationships: Authentic leaders are open about themselves and with other people. They listen to their stories and have the capacity to build connectedness with people.
Self-Discipline: Authentic leaders have focus and determination to reach their goals. There is a consistency that can be depended upon on how they act and carry out their work.
Heart: Authentic leaders lead with their heart by being authentic. They demonstrate compassion by being sensitive to others needs, opening their own self to others, and working to help the plight of others who may need assistance or guidance.
